Making a Will doesn’t have to be complicated. If you’ve never written one before, it’s natural to have questions about what the process involves and what will happen during your appointment.
At Open Law, our Will consultations are designed to help us understand your wishes and ensure any instructions you give are reflected accurately in your Will.
Here’s what you can expect.
Before we arrange your appointment, we’ll ask you to complete a Will Instruction Form.
This forms an important part of the process and helps us understand your circumstances before we meet with you.
The questionnaire will ask for information such as:
Completing the questionnaire in advance allows us to focus your appointment on discussing your wishes rather than gathering basic information.
Your consultation will take place in person with one of our solicitors.
Using the information you’ve provided in your questionnaire, we’ll talk through your circumstances and discuss how you would like your estate to be dealt with.
We’ll review the answers you’ve given, explain any options available to you and make sure your instructions are clear.

Many clients worry that they need to have every detail worked out before their appointment. In reality, the consultation is there to help guide you through your options and ensure you feel comfortable with the decisions you’re making.
Once we’ve received your instructions, we’ll prepare a draft of your Will.
You’ll have the opportunity to review the draft before anything is finalised. This gives you time to make sure everything reflects your wishes and raise any questions or amendments.
Once you’re happy to proceed, we’ll arrange for the Will to be signed and witnessed correctly.
We’ll also discuss any available storage options and answer any final questions you may have.
Many people put off making a Will because they’re worried they’ll get something wrong or won’t know the answers to every question.

Your consultation is an opportunity to talk through your wishes with an experienced solicitor, and there’s no such thing as a silly question.
If you need time to consider certain decisions, that’s perfectly normal. Nothing is finalised until you’re happy with the contents of your Will.
